Thankful for–the Memory Maker

My mother came to visit for Thanksgiving. As I thought about the fabulous traditional things we wanted to do with her, I happened to see a Knit/Crochet Kit at a store. Ironically, that very thing had been on my mind-having my mom teach my girls (and remind me) how to knit. I thought back to my knitting days (a long, long time ago in a teen galaxy far, far away…), and the hideous tan-colored scarf that was about six feet long and three feet wide. Though it was never worn-what a shock-it could have doubled as a tent canvas.
Fabulously, my mom was game on a cozy afternoon pulled out the kit, gathered my girls, and we all set about knitting together. BEST. DAY. EVER. Truly. The girls, ranging from 13 down to 7, caught on quickly and with a little encouragement (and some better needles), did wonderfully. I stopped at a local store and picked up different kinds of yarn for their individual scarves (as the kit only held one kind). Each chose their favorite color and got to it. Not only did they enjoy Grammie teaching them how to cast on or not to drop a stitch, but they kept at it on their own. The next morning I walked into my bedroom and saw all three of my girls on our bed, knitting away!
Now I must confess-I’m addicted. Though it’s a small scarf (I learned-only 26 stitches to start), I knitted in the car, at the Provo Beach Resort while my kids swam, and right before bed to relax my mind. Knitting has been a surprising memory maker for us girls-Grammie, mom, and grandgirls-as well as a gift that keeps on giving.
This season, I encourage you to find one thing to create a Memory Maker. Whether it be a craft, musical number, decorating diversion, or baked treat, do something special with your children to make the season particularly memorable.
Best,
Connie
