For summer, I like to help my kids develop their talents, in fun ways we don’t have time for during the year. And, to help curb boredom. And, to have something solid to show for three whole summer months besides an awesome tan and great swimming pool memories.
A few weeks ago I was looking for something creative, talent-developing, and socially positive for my tween daughter—something other than an iPod or video “vine” clips. However, she does enjoy making her own homemade video clips and that got me thinking. Could we combine the two?
I found a solution shared through our school…Backlot Film Camp! I’m beyond excited about what this can do for my daughter, not knowing this kind of opportunity existed. If you haven’t heard of it, here’s the deal. They have a week-ish camp for kids ages 10-16 to learn the basic ins and outs of filmmaking such as directing, editing, sound, and acting. So my video-loving daughter can now channel her desires into developing her creative genius. She will be learning my favorite thing—LIFE SKILLS!
I’m stoked.
When I got the initial info, I decided to talk with the founder/owner, Amber Lewis, to get the low-down on this experience and how she came up with the idea. She shared this wonderful backstory:
“I never felt like I made a good movie until I made one with others who knew what they were doing. For me, that wasn’t until college. I started the camp because I wanted to change that for other kids like me. The camp is set up so each person who maybe wants to be a director someday gets that real experience. They get to know what it’s like directing a movie with a sound crew, a camera crew, actors, etc. instead of just doing all the roles by him/herself. It’s meant to be educational but more importantly provide them with an experience they can’t get anywhere else. It just so happens to be a ton of fun.”
Can someone say Spielberg and SUPER 8?
If you’re interested, sign up very quickly as there are literally only a few spots left! You can go to http://www.backlotfilmcamp.com/ or call Amber personally at 801-360-8179. I’m excited to see what a difference these young filmmakers can make in the world. And, to know my daughter will have fabulous skills, a movie, and even a premier night to boot.
Best,
Connie
