The little things matter/Scripture Strips!

Scripture StripsIt’s back to school for many of us and that means it’s time to squeeze in the last moments of summer.
One of my favorite authors, Leo Buscaglia, says, “I still get wildly enthusiastic about little things…I play with leaves. I skip down the street and run against the wind.” He shares in one of his books, Living, Loving, Learning, that on a red-eye flight returning home from a speaking assignment he was toting a huge Wisconsin cheese wheel. At the late hour one of the stewardesses saw it, got giddy, and said let’s celebrate. She returned with crackers, drinks, and an assortment of airline food to share together.
That’s key in our lives. Taking, and making, the moments that matter everyday. Perhaps because summer is ending, I’ve been more aware of these moments. I’ve pulled myself away from laundry and house dos to attend impromptu “tea parties”. We’ve cuddled late in the morning, tickling our little one and laughing together. And we’ve stayed up late with popcorn and “Psych”. Just today I was headed to a very functional hair appointment (perhaps I’m the only woman on the planet who loathes getting her hair done–can someone say time waster???) My youngest daughter said, “Can I come?” At first I said no, thinking, what would she do at the hair salon when even I get bored? But she insisted and I agreed. Thank heavens! Last minute I brought along The Marshmallow Incident (by the authors of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) which she read to me on my lap while I sat under the hair dryer. Afterward, we hit Kneaders for a girls’ lunch which included sharing a fruit tart and funny jokes.
These moments don’t have to be a production, they need just for us to be present.
For today, I encourage you to truly feel and be in your life, and with your children, creating and enjoying those spontaneous joyful moments in life.
Best,
Connie
