The week before I delivered our seventh baby I attended a writing conference (yes, it was crazy but then, I’m a writer…). One of the servers at lunch noticed my pregnant state (not too hard) and graciously offered me an additional dessert. I remember people like that. A week later I was at the same hotel recuperating from birthing said baby, and ordering room service daily when who should bring it to me but this same server. Each day we were able to connect more so that by the end I knew about her life as a single mother of four children. And that despite the hardships, she was positive about her life and dedicated to making a better situation for her children.
Thus was born the monthly “Mother that Matters Because…” gift package. I wanted to do something positive for this good lady, not just in May but all year round. And open that up to you ladies as well. On a connected vein, Sunday I watched a program on Children of Peace International (on KUED) working with children in Vietnam. The woman in charge was AMAZING, while the stories heart wrenching. At one of their youth shelters, a young girl who had been raped by her brother, then beaten; when she told her father, he and the brother beat her again. Another 12-year-old boy whose family had sold him to a pimp and told him to send the money home to them. It went on and on, and yet this woman, was absolutely tenacious in helping these children find a safe place.
Why bring these up? Because of your purchases on Back to Basics, we are able to donate to this and other causes. Whether it’s to Friday Kids Respite (giving parents of special needs children one night out weekly), volunteer funds, or auctions for great causes, we are able to give back. I personally don’t keep compensation received for what I do so proceeds can go to these great people who can wisely use the donations.
So THANK YOU for all you do, because you are helping others along the way. And ultimately, isn’t that what makes life sweeter, for all of us?
