What’s Truly Sexy to a Wife

I’m so done with the relentless societal onslaught of what is “sexy”. Apparently, as a mother of seven, to keep my husband happy, I must have the following:

*plump lips

*thick lashes

*smooth, silky legs…and arms…and hair…and skin

*firm abs and buns

*no cellulite

*hair that stays ALL day in the exact hairdo I put it in at 7 a.m.

But that’s not all. And in case I forget, there are reminders EVERYWHERE. Such as my hairspray, as in “Big, Sexy Hair”. Or my shampoo, or even my make-up—case in point: I had a wonderful make-over done with big-name make-up but COULD NOT buy the fabulous eye color that looked amazing simply because of its name. I cannot even PRINT the name on this blog…did I mention, it was of the EYE COLOR?

So, I’m fighting back this week with what’s truly sexy to a wife. I would LOVE to hear one of yours, up to your top five even (yours might be read on my Studio 5 segment, AND, there is FABULOUS GIFT for the winner! See below).

Here are mine (but limited to, and not necessarily in order…):

father-sleeping-with-baby-photo-420x420-ts-804030901. Takes the night shift with the baby. In her book, Families Who Laugh…Last, Janene Wolsey Baadsgaard shares, “I used to love my husband for the way he looked in his basketball uniform. Now I love him for the way he looks in his striped flannel pajamas after being up with a sick baby all night.”

Amen.

2.  Helping children with math homework. We have an unspoken division in our household—Mom does the English homework, Dad does the math. And I feel an outpouring of such love and gratitude when I hear him patiently explain to our fourteen-year-old about exciting algebraic equations.

Title3. Fixing things. Some husbands use duct tape (I have a friend whose husband uses it for literally EVERYTHING, including couch seats) and some husbands make a phone call. I feel a thrill each time I say, “Honey, the furnace isn’t working” and he says, “Okay, I’ll take a look at it.” And then, I love to watch him work. Not just because he’s saving us money, not just because it’s uber convenient. But because his movements are knowledgeable and sure. He’ll grab this tool, and move that wire, and install this piece of something-or-other, and MAKE. IT. WORK.

I LOVE that.

4. Watching a chick flick. You didn’t hear it from me, but he will kindly, graciously watch “Pride and Prejudice” or “Sense and Sensibility” and even share occasional positive or funny comments about it. I know he would rather be watching…anything else…but he does this to show he cares. Or maybe to feel good about BYU football games in the fall. Either way, it doesn’t matter. What matters, is that we’re WATCHING it…together.

5. Listening and feedback. This is a moment when I feel the most amorous in an atypical way. Just this past weekend I had a tough experience with being misunderstood. I felt surprised and hurt, and needed understanding and soothing. And he gave it. With a listening ear, some thoughtful feedback, and then sweet hugs and kind words, I felt healed and loved.

THAT’S sexy.

Let’s fight back the lame “sexy” trend with what’s truly sexy in marriage!

Best,

Connie

  1. If it is snowing and I have scheduled something that day my husband will take time off work to drive me where I need to go. His truck has 4 wheel drive and my van doesn’t. That’s pretty sexy to me he wants me to be safe!
