Welcome to the new year! It’s a fresh year and a clean slate. Who do you want become? What do you want to let go? How do you want your life to have changed in 12 months?
Let help you answer those questions. I’ll share about creating a Life Plan, changing personal habits, and using Holy Habits to help. We’ll also hear from other experts on vision boards and the power of music to make powerful changes.
To start the change process, begin with ONE habit. The book, The Power of Habit, by Charles Duhigg, teaches key principles to making successful and lasting changes. And one of the main principles is one I’ve touted for almost 15 years—make ONE change successfully, and the rest will follow.
You might think, But where do I even begin?
First, choose one life area you MOST want to change—i.e. lose weight, get organized, tidy finances, etc.
Then, choose one habit you know undermines your success. If it’s weight loss, maybe you have a late night snack, or eat sugar two or three times a day, or don’t regularly or enjoyably exercise.
Choose ONE of those negative habits and REPLACE it with a positive habit. Perhaps now you choose to have an herbal tea at 9 p.m. instead of a snack. Or choose to eat only one small dessert a day (or even replace it with a piece of fruit Monday through Friday but then weekends dessert is on). Or change up your workout routine for a new DVD, workout clothes, or partner with a friend for more social interaction.
Write down your ONE new habit somewhere you can see it frequently. Be sure it’s one you can get behind, one that you’re sure you can do and will enjoy on a certain level. Because this isn’t just a small change, it’s a LIFESTYLE change.
Which thought may suddenly create a kind of paralysis within your psyche—“Lifestyle change? What? NEVER snack again at 9 p.m.? But I LOVE my nighttime snack.” Of course you can snack late at night if you really want. But right now, this routine is not working for you on some level. Mr. Duhigg shares in The Power of Habit the importance of knowing the “craving.” Figure out what the snack really represents for you—self-soothing, relaxation, quiet, satiation, reward for a hard-won day—and replace it with something more healthy or helpful. For example, if you understand it’s not about the sugary taste but about self-soothing, you can replace the snack with reading a great book before bedtime.
Give this a try! Jot down a few negative habits you’d like to change. Choose ONE that is most meaningful to you right now. Choose a few positive possibilities to replace that negative habit, and settle on the ONE new positive habit you feel best about. Then begin!
This one change can be incredibly powerful. As you turn the change cogs in one life area, you’ll not only be more successful but desire more changes in other life areas.
