We’re focused on finding more financial peace and prosperity. When the holidays are looming, it’s easy to NOT feel either of those, simply because so many things seem to involve BUYING.
However, you and I can shift that thinking during this season.
Ask yourself:
*What can we make or share in lieu of gifts this year?
*How can we reduce the cost of gifts, decor, or activities with creative solutions
*What are the items or experiences we want to put money into that matters?

  1. What can we make or share in lieu of gifts this year?

Consider a gift from the heart. In years past we’ve sent homemade cards to sahre that we had donated in their behalf to the local food bank, women’s shelter, or community center. Or consider doing a service season where you help build homes, serve at the food kitchen, or collect clothing donations as a family. Then share your service in a card with your family members as your gift.
One friend does a live nativity involving her family, mother of nine, so they have a few for all the parts. It’s a gift they give to the community, as well as share of themselves and inspire others to remember the reason for the season.
We’re sending out custom photos of our most recent family picture–a two for one! Consider what is meaningful then make it happen in a simple, enjoyable way.

  1. How can we reduce the cost of gifts, decor, or activities with creative solutions?

This past Halloween my son made his own Lord of the Rings costume. The experience was sort of like growing your own garden–the vegetables ultimately costing three times more than what they do at the store. However, I was also teaching him to use his talents to find creative solutions. He used items found in our home, bought supplies from clearance fabric bins and thrift stores, and used his noggin for most everything else. By the end, his costume actually cost about what we spent for the store-bought but he had a keeper costume and experience to boot.

  1. What are the items or experiences we want to put money into that matters?

In alternating years we choose to do a memory maker, taking a trip and putting money toward that instead of gifts. We will go to a hotel, swim, play golf, attend religious activities, and do things that help us feel connected and have fun as a family. the money we feel is put to better use than items that may break within a few days. Not every year, but other years it works for us.
This week as you make holiday plans, remember less is more. Consider what you most want to experience as a family to keep the spirit of the season. Then put your money wisely toward what will work for you and your family’s situation. Focus on what will bring you the most joy for the least amount of fuss or spending.
And remember to turn in your Weekly Review by Monday at midnight to be entered one final time in the drawing for one-hour life coaching with me and the gift basket!
Best,
Connie
